The 12 Days of Christmas, Pasadena Style

Celebrate the holiday season in Pasadena with our 12 Days of Christmas. This month will be full of fun activities and programs for people of all ages; here are some of the highlights by date:

Friday, Dec. 4

What: Christmas Tree Lighting
When: 6 – 8 p.m.; outdoor movie (“A Christmas Story”) starts at approx. 8:05 p.m.
Where: Pasadena City Hall (1211 Southmore)

Description: Join Santa & Mrs. Claus as they turn on the Christmas lights and officially kick-off the holiday season. There will be entertainment from local school groups throughout the evening. Plus, families can enjoy decorated trees, hayrides, vendors and plenty of Christmas lights! Around 8 p.m., the holiday classic “A Christmas Story” will be shown on an outdoor movie screen. Admission to the event is free.


Saturday, Dec. 5

What: Christmas Open House
When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Heritage Park & Museum (204 South Main)

Description: The Pasadena Historical Society and the City of Pasadena have teamed up for a Christmas Open House at the museum. All of our historical homes on the property will be adorned with Christmas lights and festive decorations. There will also be refreshments and a performance by a choir. This event is free and is open to everyone in the community.

What: Holiday Lighted Parade
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Fairmont Parkway (from Pansy to Watters and back)

Description: A section of one of Pasadena’s busiest roads will be transformed into a winter wonderland and filled with a different kind of traffic: lighted parade entries from dozens of groups, businesses and organizations in the community. Entrants this year include the Pasadena ISD All-City Band, which is comprised of students from all ten of the intermediate schools in Pasadena; and special entries from various City of Pasadena departments, among others. Awards will be given in eight categories. This parade always draws thousands of spectators; come to the parade this year and see why!


Sunday, Dec. 6

What: Pasadena Philharmonic Christmas Concert with the San Jacinto College Choirs
When: 2:30 p.m.
Where: Sam Rayburn High School Auditorium

The Pasadena Philharmonic will perform a Christmas concert, "Christmas, Toys and Gloria" with San Jacinto College Central choirs and area high school choirs. Admission is $10 for adults or $6 for students.


Tuesday, Dec. 8

What: Christmas Dinner & Dance for Multipurpose Recreation Center participants
When: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Pasadena Convention Center

Description: All Multipurpose Recreation Center participants and their families are invited to the Center’s annual Christmas Dinner and Dance. Dress in your holiday best and enjoy music, dancing, dinner and fun!


Friday, Dec. 11

What: Christmas Open House
When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Madison Jobe Senior Center

Description: The Madison Jobe Senior Center is hosting its annual Christmas Open House and Dance, and all seniors are invited. This free event is a great way to socialize, enjoy some refreshments & musical entertainment, learn more about the center and share the Christmas spirit. Musical entertainment will be provided.


Saturday, Dec. 12

What: Christmas Music and Pictures with Santa
When: Fairmont library:
10 a.m. to noon: Santa Pictures
11 a.m. to noon: Christmas Music – Harpist Emily Mitchell
Central library:
1 p.m. to 2 p.m.: Christmas Music– Harpist Emily Mitchell
2 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Santa Pictures
2 p.m. to 3 p.m.: Christmas Music – Colonial Oaks Hand Bells
Where: Both Pasadena Public Library locations

Description: Enjoy live Christmas music and take pictures with Santa at both library locations. All programs are free; please bring a camera for photos.

What: Lights of Millerville Extreme Light Show & Street Party
When: 6 p.m.
Where: 5223 Rainier Street (Strawberry Glen subdivision)

Description: Help support the Pasadena Police Department’s Officer Santa program at this Christmas street party. At the center of it all, there will be an extreme light show, with thousands of lights dancing to Christmas music. There will also be a petting zoo, jugglers, face painting, pictures with Santa & Mrs. Claus, pony rides, midway games, a fire show, train rides and much more. Plus, there will be free hot chocolate, bottled water, popcorn and cookies. There will be a complimentary shuttle service from the city’s Multipurpose Recreation Center (5200 Burke Road). The cost of admission is one new, unwrapped toy per person. Everything collected will be donated to the Officer Santa Program, which provides gifts to children in need this Christmas.


Tuesday, Dec. 15

What: Teen Eats – Eggnog French Toast
When: 4 p.m.
Where: Fairmont library (4330 Fairmont)

Description: Teens can learn how to make a familiar favorite with a holiday twist in this free program at the Fairmont library.


Friday, Dec. 18

What: Lunch and a Christmas Movie
When: 11 a.m.
Where: Madison Jobe Senior Center

Description: Seniors (ages 50+) are invited to the Madison Jobe Senior Center to enjoy lunch and the classic Christmas movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Lunch is $2.


Saturday, Dec. 19

What: Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department’s Project Santa
When: Varies, depending on location
Where: Neighborhoods throughout Pasadena

Description: Pasadena residents don’t have to wait until Christmas Eve for Santa Claus to come to town! Santa will be visiting neighborhoods throughout the city the weekend before Christmas. But for this visit, forget the sleigh and reindeer; Santa will be riding on a fire truck, escorted by members of the Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters from each of the nine fire districts will cover streets and neighborhoods in their district. Because there are differences in the sizes of each fire district, there are no set times for the visits, but typically, the districts get started sometime around dark or late in the afternoon (around 3 p.m.) and, if needed, will finish their visits on Sunday, Dec. 20.


Monday, Dec. 21

What: Senior Day Trip
When: 4 p.m.
Where: Madison Jobe Senior Center

Description: Seniors (ages 50+) can participate in this day trip to the Houston Zoo, which has been turned into a winter wonderland with more than two million Christmas lights. The bus will leave the senior center at 4 p.m. and will stop for dinner. The cost of the trip is $11.


Tuesday, Dec. 22
What: Christmas Movie: “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”
When: 6:30 p.m.
Where: Central library (1201 Jeff Ginn)

Description: Enjoy this classic holiday movie in the meeting room at the central library. Admission is free.


Wednesday, Dec. 23
What: Christmas Movie Day
When: 10:00 a.m.
Where: Madison Jobe Senior Center

Description: Seniors (ages 50+) are invited to a Christmas movie marathon at the Madison Jobe Senior Center. The movies will start at 10 a.m. and will include: “Home Alone” at 10 a.m., “White Christmas” at noon, and “Holiday Inn” at 2 p.m. Holiday treats will be served during all movies. This is a free event for seniors.
